A blast from the past, LimeWire goes NFT

Security weekly

Hi and welcome to another Security weekly. Where we laugh, we cry, and share the latest and greatest of security news.

In this weeks edition:

  • Apple announces ‘Lockdown mode’

  • Security advisory exposes vulnerable sites 'by accident'

  • LimeWire relaunches as NFT space

Coming this fall, Lockdown mode will harden a device from outside interference. Limiting what's getting in, and what's going out. Like Alcatraz but for your phone.

How good was this movie? Miss you everyday, Sean.

  • Blocking incoming Facetime calls from unknown callers new phone who dis?

  • Disabling attachments from various apps a tactic often used to deploy malware payloads

  • Not allowing configuration profiles to be installed what typically follows after an attachment deploys malware

After 2 years of Covid, I didn’t think I’d ever be excited about the word lockdown again, but here we are. Go Apple!

Security advisory exposes vulnerabile devices "by accident

An interesting article from Bleepingcomputer came across my feed and immediately caught my attention. When publishing a new security advisory, MITRE decided to not only post the details of the attack, but also direct links to vulnerable devices.. auch?

CVE’s are a major help for all security professionals great or small. They describe attacks, or weaknesses, and – if available – how to remediate them. Great! But not when you name and shame the possible targets in the same post I’d say.Alot of sites have automated updates linked to the cve.org site. You can imagine not only people with good intentions read these advisories, right?

Bleepingcomputer contacted MITRE for an explanation, but got told “What’s wrong? We’ve done it before”.

Sounds like somebody woke up with a bad mood.

They retracted the device details afterwards, but maybe too late. Do you think they were in the wrong? Let me know!

LimeWire relaunches as NFT marketplace

The NFT space is currently not in it’s best state, but that's not withholding the oldschool pirating file sharing giant, LimeWire, to relaunch as an NFT marketplace. What a time to be alive.LimeWire announced earlier this year that they saw a huge demand in the NFT space from artists and fans. This lead to the rebranding as an NFT marketplace.

A picture of the LimeWire employee who came up with the numbers for this "huge demand".

This week they announced names like Travis Barker (the drummer from Blink 182) and Aitch (a UK rapper) to be onboard.

Remember when LimeWire was the number 1 reason the family PC was infest with virusses? 2006 was a good time to be young. I'm getting nostalgic..
